The E-Sailors project is structured into seven Work Packages (WPs). Below is the list of all WPs along with a summary of their objectives, which serve as a small description of their purpose:
| WP No. | Lead Beneficiary | WP Name | Small Description / Objectives |
|---|---|---|---|
| WP1 | UT | Management and Recruitment of E-Sailors | The objectives of WP1 are to: 1) Set up effective managerial structures and communication channels; 2) Monitor progress based on KPIs, manage risks and budget and ensure quality; 3) Ensure FAIR data management; 4) Select and recruit E-Sailors (DCs). This WP involves management activities. |
| WP2 | KTH | E-sail mission and science leadership | The objectives of WP2 are to: 1) Design next-generation E-sail experiments for lunar orbit and deep space; 2) Design next-generation E-sail nanospacecraft for lunar orbit and deep space; 3) Analyse, develop and test other solar-wind propulsion systems and compare with E-sail; 4) Monitor progress of individual research projects. This WP focuses on research and involves E-Sailors 1–3. |
| WP3 | TUD | E-sail propulsion design and characterization | The objectives of WP3 are to: 1) Design E-sail payloads for lunar orbit and deep space; 2) Develop and integrate high-voltage source and electron emitters; 3) Analyse and develop E-sail characterization with Langmuir probes; 4) Monitor progress of individual research projects. This WP focuses on research and involves E-Sailors 4–7. |
| WP4 | Aalto | E-sail nanospacecraft platform design | The objectives of WP4 are to: 1) Analyse and develop visual E-sail deployment monitoring methods; 2) Design lunar and deep-space nanospacecraft communications and ranging; 3) Design Triangulated Celestial Navigation (TCN) on-board computer for FPGA image processing; 4) Monitor progress of individual research projects. This WP focuses on research and involves E-Sailors 8–11. |
| WP5 | UNIPI | E-sail software and modelling | The objectives of WP5 are to: 1) Lead TCN architecture and algorithm development; 2) Implement E-sail simulation fidelity levels in Electric Sail Mission Expeditor (ESME); 3) Develop single-tether and multi-tether E-sail spin plane orientation and spin rate control in ESME; 4) Develop Realtime 3D (RT3D) simulation environment and support TCN testing; 5) Monitor progress of individual research projects. This WP focuses on research and involves E-Sailors 12–15. |
| WP6 | RTU | Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication | The objectives of WP6 are to: 1) Raise awareness of the E-sail and disseminate the outputs and results of the project to target audiences; 2) Publicize the topic among the general public. This WP involves dissemination activities for all researchers. |
| WP7 | UNIPI | Training and development of transversal skills | The objectives of WP7 are to: 1) Create Personal and Career Development Plans for all E-sailors; 2) Organize network-wide training schools; 3) Provide individual training opportunities to E-Sailors; 4) Integrate research results into teaching. This WP involves training activities for all researchers. |
